FAQ

General

Can I download and install the free version of Copernic Desktop Search at work?
spacer

No. The free version available for download is intended for home and personal use only. Commercial use is prohibited and requires a license of either the Professional version or the Corporate version , which offer enterprise-oriented features, maintenance and support for use throughout organizations.

Is there a maximum number of files and emails that I can index with Copernic Desktop Search?
spacer

No. There is no limit to the size of the index or the number of indexed items. However, a large index requires more memory and more time to perform searches. So the only limit is the power of your computer (disk space, CPU speed).

I am concerned about the privacy of my personal data. What is your policy regarding privacy?
spacer

We understand your concerns and CDS was designed with your privacy in mind. Rest assured that the data indexed by CDS stays on your PC and on no account will it be transferred to us or any of our partners.

Furthermore, computer activity is never logged. It is solely monitored to enable or disable the indexing process.

Consult our software privacy policy for additional information.

Is there a way to make sure that Copernic Desktop Search always indexes at full speed?
spacer

Yes. By default, CDS does not index while you are using your mouse or keyboard, or when your CPU is being heavily solicited by another application. You can change these configuration settings from the "Index & Performance" tab of the "Options" window of CDS. Note that indexing is always performed at full speed when the CDS main window is open and active (in foreground).

Some file types cannot be processed using Copernic Desktop Search. Why not?
spacer

By default, CDS only indexes the file types that it recognizes. You can specify additional file types to index from the "Advanced" tab of the "Options" window of CDS. You can choose whether you want to index only the file properties (name, date, size, etc.) or to index the files as text files.

Which email applications does CDS support?
spacer

The current CDS version supports Outlook Express 6.x/5.x, Outlook 2007/2003//XP/2000, Eudora 7.x/6.x/5.x and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x for emails and attachments.

CDS also allows you to search for Outlook 2007/2003/XP/2000 (including Global Address List) and Outlook Express 6.x/5.x contacts, Windows Address Book and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x contacts. For more details about files indexed by CDS, see the above table where all desktop search categories are covered.

Note that on-the-fly indexing is only available with Outlook. In other cases, index updates are carried out regularly (at fixed intervals).

Where are the index data files of Copernic Desktop Search stored? Can I change the location of their folder?
spacer

By default, the index data files are stored in a per-user path like this: "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Copernic\DesktopSearch." This ensures that all users of your computer have their own personal index stored in a non-shared location. If you want to move your index data files, you can do this from the "Advanced" tab of the "Options" window of CDS.

Cisco Agent detects Copernic Desktop Search as a malicious program. Can this be true?
spacer

No. Cisco Agent inaccurately detects Copernic Desktop Search as a malicious program because CDS monitors the computer use to enable or disable the indexing process.

CDS now displays search results in the deskbar window. How does it sort the results?
spacer

CDS uses the same settings as those of the application window to sort the search results in the deskbar window.

What happens if I enable logging in the advanced options?
spacer

It allows CDS to log its own activity in a local file. This file is located in your index folder. The contents of this log file can help our Technical Support Team to provide better support when needed.

What are the system requirements?
spacer

Operating System: XP/Vista.
Browser: Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 or later.
